The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy Note 4 models on T-Mobile are the latest devices that received the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. The OS update became officially available on Dec. 1, 2015, with the carrier providing the details on its support pages.
iDigitalTimes wrote that the updates will be sent over-the-air (OTA), which means that Note 4 and Note Edge users should expect to receive a wireless notification soon. When the software becomes available, users will be prompted to automatically update their handset. Others can also opt to go to Settings > More > About Device > Software Update to determine whether an update is available.
Based on the same report by iDigitalTimes, the system build or system version of the Galaxy Note 4 is N910TUVU2DOK2 or N910T3UVU1DOK2, which will update the device from Android 5.0 to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge was launched by Samsung at the IFA in September 2014. The two devices operated on the Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. The Galaxy Note 4 on T-Mobile became available in October 2014, running on the Android 5.0.1. This means that the Android 5.1.1 will be the first update in almost 15 months since its release.
As for the Galaxy Note Edge, it has the system build N915TUVU2COK2, which will update the handset from Android 5.0.1 to 5.1.1.
The OS update will require 150MB of memory on the Note Edge on T-Mobile and anywhere between 223.28MB and 677.68MB on the Note 4 on T-Mobile. The update will provide Advanced Messaging, T-Mobile Video Calling and several other features, including security add-ons and bug fixes.
The support page of T-Mobile also stated that the update will bring a number of features and will be available for download via Wi-Fi or Samsung Kies or Samsung Smart Switch.
The rollout is expected to occur in stages, so some users might receive a notification at an earlier time. It might take several weeks or days before the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop will be provided to all handsets. The Video Calling capability was recently rolled out by the carrier in September 2015. A number of Samsung handsets will also acquire the new feature soon, Tech Times wrote.
Sprint was the first carrier that rolled out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to its Note 4 and Note Edge. AT&T was second, while T-Mobile is the most recent. More updates and details on the rollout and other concerns are expected in the following weeks.
