Prisoners inside Nicaragua's La Modelo maximum security jail live in squalid conditions where they are beaten and forced to eat inedible foods on a daily basis.

Now, inmates living within one the world's most dangerous penitentiaries are taking their story to Facebook, through a secretly-managed page filled with grainy images of boxing matches, drug trade, and cell block selfies.

"I got the idea of starting the page after I went to visit my brother, who had just arrived there, and I saw the bad treatment from the prison guards, how the mistreat the families of prisoners," an anonymous sister of one of the prisoners told Fusion.

"I decided to make this page with the goal of showing people how the prisoners live and what it's like to be locked up," she added. "Because we're all humans, and we can have a second chance."

La Modelo - located miles from the state capital of Managua - houses murderers, rapists, and violent drug offenders from across Latin America. American Jason Puracal experienced the deplorable living conditions first-hand in 2010 when he was Nicaraguan authorities accused him of money laundering. He was sentenced to 22 years at La Modelo a year later, but was freed after two years when a judge found the charges to be baseless.

While current prisoners don't have the same exposure Puracal had, they do have illegal cellphones and commitment from the Facebook page's administrator. The SPN "La Modelo" Nicaragua page already has over 9,300 followers, most coming from Nicaragua.

"The truth is, nobody knows who I am and nobody needs to know," she said. "This is like a secret that only I know."
