Canelo Alvarez is still pumped up after defeating Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and from the looks of it, he feels he can take on anybody.
Does that include Gennady Golovkin?
Well, Alvarez didn’t exactly quip a definite answer though he did flex his muscles to the press which could be possibly taken as a positive answer.
Alvarez put on a masterful and powerful show, earning the nod of the judges leading to the unanimous decision victory. As per Yahoo Sports, the judges saw it, 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111, all in favor of the Mexican and new lineal WBC middleweight champion though Cotto trainer Freddie Roach believes that it should have been closer than that.
So, is Alvarez is ready to face the WBC mandatory challenger, Gennady Golovkin?
Right now, only Alvarez is left to deal with the issue though he did say that he was not afraid and was ready to get it on despite being close friends with Triple G.
"I'll put the gloves on right now and fight him," says Canelo via the Bleacher Report. "I respect he's a great champion. I know him. He's a friend of mine. But right now I'll put the gloves on against him."
But there is an issue up in the air, something that could hinder possible negotiations between the two camps.
Alvarez is not too keen fighting over the 155 lbs. catchweight while Golovkin is not willing to drop down to it as well. The demands of Alvarez are unlikely to be recognized by the WBC which somehow shrouds the showdown which may possibly happen in 2016.
Additionally, Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya is reportedly not yet ready to commit to a possible Alvarez vs. Golovkin setto, something that was brought up during the post-fight game interview as cited by Boxing News 24.
Should Alvarez decide to have his way, there is a chance that he could be stripped of the WBC middleweight title as well.
However, if Alvarez’s strong replies are to be taken into account, his body language seems to indicate that he is inclined to take on Golovkin head on, though such may have been made due the adrenaline rush still flowing in the Mexican following his triumph at the time.
