Previously, Facebook users only had two options when trying to avoid their exes. They can either unfriend or block the person. However, the social media site recently shared that it is looking for a method for users to meet halfway.

Facebook announced that it will start testing new tools that will help its users manage complicated relationships better, without having to resort to completely avoiding their exes online. The tools will be made to provide enough distance between users and not seem too desperate by banning persons.

Moreover, Facebook stated that it will inform users to try the new tools when they change their relationship status on the social media site. The option, “see less,” will become available to give a reasonable gap between two persons. There will also be limitations on the content that the other party can view from the withdrawing user. Furthermore, there can be adjustments made to past photos and posts, helping users clear their profile if they should separate from a former loved one.

Tech Crunch wrote that the main objective is to provide enough space between two users, especially after a breakup.

Choosing any of the new options and tools will mean that the user will see less of the person’s posts in their News Feed. They will no longer be promoted by auto-suggestions to tag or message the individual in photos. Previously, users can only prevent an ex from appearing in their “Photo Memories” side module. Now, users can also go through their past posts and change the privacy of each or untag themselves accordingly. It will be a convenient way to update family, friends and new contacts about a user’s current status. This way, current partners do not have to find any evidence of the past relationship.

Facebook users can also manage the content that the other person can see in their profile. Users can maintain their privacy settings or select to hide their posts from specific individuals. As a result, the ex can only view posts where they are specifically tagged in, publicly shared ones and posts shared on the Timelines of mutual friends.

Another advantage that the new tools provide is discretion. The other person will not know when users make the changes.

The tools will be available from the Help Center. These are currently rolling out on mobile only and are optional among users in the United States. More changes might be introduced by Facebook in the coming months.
