Days before Charlie Sheen revealed he has been HIV positive since 2011, rumors of the actor afflicted with the virus had already circulated, buffering the shock factor of his revelation when it finally came via the exclusive interview he gave to Matt Lauer Tuesday.

Instead, his discussion of his health condition on national TV only served to confirmed what, as it appeared, many already knew.

"I am here to admit that I am HIV positive," he said, as quoted by the BBC.

"It started with a series of cluster headaches and sweating - I was hospitalised," he shared. "I thought I had a brain tumour - after tests they said this was the situation. It's a hard three letters to absorb."

The 50-year-old's doctor, Robert Huizenga, had also appeared on the "Today" show on NBC and said that the former "Two and a Half Men" star had taken medication for his condition, which suppressed the virus. He now has "an undetectable level of the virus in his blood."

Clarifying rumors about the Hollywood actor having AIDS, Dr. Huizenga had this to say: "Charlie does not have Aids - that's when the virus suppresses the immune system. He is healthy."

Sheen said that he was not aware how he acquired the virus. However, he had since had to shell out a fortune just keep his diagnosis a secret, as he said those whom he trusted his diagnosis with had required payouts that reached $10 million.
As such, he later decided to go public with his diagnosis in order to stop being taken advantaged of.

"What people forget is that that's money they're taking from my children," he said, according to Today. "I trusted them and they were deep in my inner circle, and I thought they could be helpful. My trust turned to their treason."

"I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, threatening the health of so many others that couldn't be further from the truth," he told Lauer.

Further, he also said that revealing his diagnosis was an act that let him "release myself from this prison today" and that he will no longer be handing payouts to those in the know.

Interestingly, Sheen said that he had "informed every sexual partner of his condition." However, former girlfriend Bree Olsen said that he "never said anything to me," as noted by The New York Times. She had been living with him for six months after his diagnosis.

Olson also admitted that she got herself tested for HIV and received negative results.
