An unencumbered viewer base is a happy viewer base. Fox News learned the hard way following backlash they received for limiting the Republican Party's inaugural 2016 presidential debate to cable subscribers.
Still, the right-leaning news network earned record ratings last August primarily on GOP front-runner Donald Trump's participation, an appearance that came amid repeated controversial remarks he made about immigrants.
Of the nine presidential hopefuls Trump joined onstage, seven still poll at or above Fox's 2.5 percent minimum necessary to qualify for Tuesday's primary debate. Missing the cut this time around are New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, both who will participate in Fox Business Network and the Wall Street Journal's joint "first forum" slated for 7 p.m. EST.
The fourth official GOP debate begins at 9 p.m. EST and will be moderated by Fox Business Network anchor Maria Bartiromo, Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Gerard Baker, and Fox News host Neil Cavuto. As the network put it, this primary will "weigh more heavily on economic issues than in prior debates and will also focus on other domestic issues and foreign policy."
Unlike CNBC's GOP debate last month, cord-cutters won't need a cable subscription to watch. Fox has partnered with various cable and satellite providers - including DirecTV, Cable One, and Frontier - to make it free for everyone. Online viewers won't need a subscription either; they can watch the digital live stream on FoxBusiness.com.
