Is It Really Floyd Mayweather's Last Hurrah?

As expected Floyd Mayweather Jr. won over Andre Berto via unanimous decision. There was no surprise there and so with the way the fight went.

Mayweather did get in some shots but made sure he wouldn’t be tagged by his opponent. As before, Mayweather stuck to his defensive matrix, ducked and moved – for the entire fight which reportedly saw only 13,395 spectators on hand.

There was nothing exciting to expect despite the hype that both Mayweather and Berto tried to pull heading into the fight. In all, it was a blockbuster bust if you compare it to the previous record-breaking revenue fights that the now 49-0 boxer has had in his career.

Berto hardly made good his promise of having the speed and power to take down Mayweather. In fact he spent a lot of time trying to chase Mayweather. As he bared through TMZ Sports, Berto said he chased Floyd so much, he needed track shoes.

Well, the running part is nothing new and everyone knows that such is Mayweather’s style. He knows how to frustrate opponents and if you go through that list, big names ended up complaining pretty much the same.

Love him or hate him, Mayweather says that this is it. He has accomplished practically everything and thus believes that he doesn’t have anything else to prove.

This despite belief of fans and the boxing world that Mayweather is holding out, the fact remains that it is only Floyd Jr. who can decide on what he intends to do next. And for now, he reiterates that he is done.

Mayweather has had that recognition. He fights when he wants to fights and dictates the stipulations. Recalling his prior fight against Pacquiao, do remember that the two sides had a lot of anxious moments when it came to the drug-testing style as well as the purse split.

In the end, Pacquiao gave in just to see the fight materialize.

Of course, everyone knows how Mayweather whittled down the names for his last fight, two names (Berto and Karim Mayfield) that didn’t necessarily gain much approval. It seems that Mayweather opted to take the easy route to the record and now he has the world right in the palm of his hands thinking on what he plans to do next.

The word out is that Mayweather plans to build careers of other boxers under the Mayweather Promotions banner. That includes fighters like Badou Jack who successfully defended his WBC Super Middleweight title over the favored George Groves of England on the undercard.

“My team believes in me and I believe in my team,” Mayweather said via the New York Post. “And as long as my team believes in me we’ll be successful.”

On paper and based on the latest pronouncements of Mayweather, it seems that the flamboyant one has truly made up his mind. Not even a 9-figure payday can allegedly make him fight once more though he has had a history of announcing his retirement before.

He announced his retirement on July, 2007 after his match with Ricky Hatton and yet returned to the ring two years later (May 2, 2009) to face Juan Manuel Marquez).
