As expected, Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto made short work of Daniel Geale to retain his WBC middleweight world title.

Despite being out for about a year, Cotto seemingly showed no signs of rust. He last fought on June 7, 2014 when he won the WBC middleweight belt from Sergio Martinez held at the Madison Square Garden.

Cotto, the heavy favorite to make short work of Geale, did as expected, flooring the challenger twice before referee Harvey Dock stopped the fight.

With the win, Cotto improves to 40-3, 33 by knockout. It was the third loss in five fights for the 34-year-old Geale who is now totes a boxing record of 31-3 after the loss.

With that over and done with, all eyes are on who Cotto will face next.

Prior to the fight, many were anticipating a much awaited showdown between Cotto and Canelo ‘Saul’ Alvarez which may possibly take place later in the year.

In a previous article, it was mentioned that negotiations between Cotto and Alvarez started as early as December. Had both sides agreed, Cotto and Alvarez would have fought last May 2.

With both fighters now over and done with their set bouts, it will be interesting if Cotto would finally sit down and meet Alvarez for his next match.

Alvarez has his eyes on Cotto’s WBC middleweight title and such could materialize if Cotto’s reaction after the fight is to be any indication for such.

"Let's do it," he said. "Before that, I want to spend some time with my family and enjoy them again, but then it is back to LA and training for Canelo."

As it stands now, Cotto could expand his options as far as his next opponent is concerned.

Quietly observing in the background is IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin who is undefeated and totes a 33-0 record, 30 of them coming by KO.

Golovkin got a chance to watch the Cotto-Geale fight and was pretty impressed at Cotto’s triumph. Though there is no word yet, there could be a chance the he could fight either Cotto or Alvarez next.

However, if Oscar Dela Hoya is to be believed, Golovkin could be facing Cotto first and Alvarez next since he won’t let Canelo fight Golovkin at least for another two years.

So could we be treated a unification fight if Cotto and Golovkin does materialize?

“Absolutely, yeah. Maybe a fight in England. Yeah, sure, maybe. A mega-fight in Germany. A mega-fight in Russia. Yeah, sure, I’m ready” says Golovkin via Fighthype. The interview can be viewed below.

Right now, it seems that a Cotto-Alvarez mega fight has the inside track. If negotiations fall apart once again, Golovkin could possibly step in.
