After losing a lot of players in their rotation, the New York Yankees got some help after getting pitcher Brandon McCarthy.

The veteran right-hander from Arizona will be useful for the Yankees after they lost CC Sabathia due to a degenerative right knee injury. New York has been very expressive in saying that they wanted to acquire Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago Cubs but were unable to settle. In exchange for Vidal Nuno, the Diamondbacks will be giving cash to the Yankees.

In an AP Sports report, Joe Girardi, manager of the Yankees said, "McCarthy is an experienced starter that we expect to pitch well for us. I know he's had his struggles, but he's seemed to turn it around. He has a good arm. His last few starts have been pretty good." Girardi commented about the trades that occurred on July 6, 2014, "It's kind of a tough day."

McCarthy, 31 years old, has a 5.01 ERA and went 3-10 with Arizona. He won his last two starts, although he started the season with six consecutive losses. He jumped teams in his nine seasons in the MLB, going 45-60 with an ERA of 4.21. McCarthy averaged over six innings in each of his outing. He had seven good starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

According to New York Daily News, the New York Yankees needed to make drastic changes after garnering a .500 record after the MLB moved past half of the season. Alfonso Soriano was designated for assignment.

McCarthy talked to reporters about his transfer to the Yankees, "I feel like I'm in a good place now. I've kind of changed up the way I'm attacking recently, and there are some positives I've started to see. I still feel like I've thrown the ball well this year." He is bound to be in the Yankee rotation against the Cleveland Indians on July 9, 2014.

Before 2013, McCarthy signed a deal for two years with the Diamondbacks valued at $15.5 million. MLB experts say that Brian Cashman had been eyeing McCarthy for several weeks. Arizona will pay $2.05 million out of the $4.1 million remaining in the pitcher's contract. The Yankees will pay $1 million as a reassignment bonus.

The Yankees are expected to join the postseason games with the recent addition of McCarthy. The team is currently 43-43 and only 3 1/2 away from the top spot in the NL East.
