A total of 68 people were injured on Sunday by a human avalanche during the match between the Osasuna team and Betis, at El Saddar stadium, home of Spanish League's Osasuna, local media reported.

The incident ocurred on Sunday, after the first goal from the local team, when a fence in the stadium's south zone was taken down, which caused a human avalanche which injured dozens of fans, including children in the stadium, reported the Daily Mail.

According to the same source, around 40 people received medical attention in the stadium due to minor injuries, while the rest of those injured were taken to a nearby hospital, without there being injuries that put the lives of fans at risk, according to the local Red Cross.

The avalanche happened at around minute 12, when Osasuna, a team fighting against being disqualified, scored the first goal of the match. The weight of fans celebrating the goal in the lower benches caused the fence located in the south zone of the stadium to give out, causing the accident.

The incident caused the match to be paused for 35 minutes, after which the match resumed. Footballers from both teams helped the injured people on the field while paramedics and the Red Cross arrived.

After the match resumed, Osasuna beat Betis 2-1; however, this result was not enough to keep the team from being sent back to second division along with Valladolid and Betis, a team which had been demoted before, as The Telegraph confirmed.

Sports authorities confirmed that the fence gave out due to the weight of fans, but so far there has been no confirmation of whether the stadium's safety measures were violated or if there has been an investigation on the matter.
