A new update for Instagram has sent the social networking world buzzing with a new photo and video messaging feature.

Known as Instagram Direct, the Instagram feature allows the user to send photo and video messages directly to friends.

"Now you'll see a new icon in the top right corner of your home feed," noted Instagram on the Apple iTunes page. "Tap it to see photos and videos that people have sent directly to you."

According to Instagram, users can select "Direct" instead of "Followers" when deciding to send the photo or video. Once the user finishes editing the image or video, the user can select the people they want to share the message with.

Instagram version 5.0.0 also includes general bug fixes and performance improvements. On an Apple device, the latest update requires 14MB of memory.

The Instagram Direct feature is said to be a move to compete against the Snapchat app. Snapchat also allows people to share images with friends although the pictures disappear within seconds of being viewed. A difference from Instagram Direct, however, is Snapchat allows users to draw or write messages on the image before being sent.

Facebook owns Instagram, and the latter had made a $3 billion offer to buy Snapchat, however, the all-cash deal was declined by the Evan Spiegel-led company.
