Matt Bomer is back. We can all calm down. In last night’s Season 5 premiere of “White Collar,” Neal Caffrey devises a scheme to get his friend Peter Burke out of prison. The season will document their relationship now that their roles have reversed, and according to Tim DeKay, who plays agent Burke, “you’ll see the biggest changes in this season.”

“Peter and Neal are dealing with this in a huge way,” Dekay told TVLine. “Peter is behind bars, and their roles have been reversed. Peter appropriately says, ‘The irony of this is not lost on me.’ How Peter gets out and how Peter believes he gets out is what will propel us through the whole season.”

Dekay continued to describe Peter’s evolution since he met Neal in the series pilot. He never realized his number one target would become his best friend, but the issue of trust and his own well being lingers. “Now that he has gone to prison because of his closeness to this guy, Peter has to strongly examine his relationship with Neal and how it will continue,” he said.

In Season 5, the trust issue becomes personal. It’s about his life and career. No longer is he concerned with petty issues, and this personal trust will push Neal and Peter to reveal their true feelings about one another. They have to address their relationship as a strong friendship, but one that lacks the level of trust to flourish.

And with Peter behind bars, Neal needs a new handler, which stirs up mixed emotions in Peter. “While Peter realizes the current situation calls for a new handler, Peter is jealous, he misses the chase and the stakeouts and going out there with his buddy and solving crimes,” Dekay said. “He misses it, but he also needs it. The right thing to do is to have this change.”

“White Collar” is back and airs Thursday nights on USA Network.
