Lady Gaga did it. So did Rihanna. It’s common for popstars to change their image. It keeps their material fresh, their look more fitting with the times. Their makeovers may prompt several double takes, but never endure more than subtle backlash rooted in surprise. When a young teen star, however, decides to take on a new, more adult like persona, complete mayhem ensues.

It’s a neverending cycle. The young star tries his or her hardest to shed the innocent and preconceived perception of who they are, and as mainstream media resists and criticizes, the singer’s passion for the outlandish grows. It sparks a fire in their hearts, insisting that they continue to push the boundaries and establish themselves as a unique and independent individual. This sort of behavior should be encouraged. After all, if a new and upcoming pop star changes who they are, fans embrace and often adapt to the new trend. If that said singer has haunted past as a celebrated child star, then their rebellion is grounds for rehab. How is this fair?

Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, has received the brunt of such ridicule ever since the first signs of common teenager behavior. But she’s a child star, so of course she can’t act on normal teenage impulses, she has to be groomed. But Cyrus responded with a fat ‘f*** you’ and took control of her lavish new image, of which she demonstrated wonderfully on the most recent episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Check out some of the highlights below. And Miley, please don’t stop being yourself.
