The bikes are polished, the gas tanks are full and the engines are fine tuned to perfection. The Sons are back and they’re rolling out for yet another thrill ride of a season. The first four episodes feature SAMCRO in their worst state yet. Blood flows like water, betrayal runs rampant and no one can seem to grab hold of the reins. How could things get so bad?

For fans still reveling in the bloodshed that ensued during this week’s episode, showrunner Kurt Sutter and the cast opened up about the details regarding their morbid decisions. What’s most pressing, the death of Otto, played by Sutter himself. Why would they take him out after he killed Toric? Entertainment Weekly has the answers.

“I just felt like Otto has killed so many f—ing people in jail at this point, I could not have him do some other horrific act of violence and not take a half-dozen bullets in the chest because it would have been too ridiculous for him to get away with yet another one,” Sutter said. “So, I was like alright. It’s time to go.”

And what about Toric? Fans expected him to stick around for an entire season. Unfortunately, Donal Logue, who plays Toric, signed a contract to star as a series regular in Season 2 of “Vikings” and had to leave earlier than anticipated. “Donal felt awful,” Sutter said. “We had set up this season-long arc for this character, and suddenly I didn’t have the actor. It’s just sort of the nature of the business, and so, what I always try to do when that stuff happens is say, ‘Okay, how do I turn a negative into a positive?’”

The bodies continued to drop. Phil and V-Lin also closed the episode six feet deep. “I was definitely hoping for some sort of gun-blazing outlaw death,” said Christopher Reed, who plays Phil, adding that he had to do a bit of detective work at first to find out details. While he won’t revolve his source, he says, “They told me it was something pretty big in that it sets off a chain of events in Charming, and it sure does.”

While Jax struggles to gain control of his loose cannon club, expect more bodies to fall during as the blood drenched Season 6 unfolds. “Sons of Anarchy” airs Tuesday nights on FX.
