Chile is slated to be a major contender in this year's Academy Award category for best foreign language film after submitting the festival film "Gloria."

The nation received its first nomination last year with the Gabriel Garcia Bernal starrer "No" and is looking to build its momentum and status as a top producer of cinema in Latin America. The 2013 pick "Gloria," which is directed by Sebastian Lelio, has had successful bows at such film festivals as the Berlin Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the upcoming New York Film Festival. The film's actress Paulina Garcia won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at Berlin; the film was also nominated for the competition's all-important Golden Bear. The film also won the Best Film in Progress award at the 2012 San Sebastian Film Festival.

"We're confident that due to the outstanding quality of its editing, acting, script and direction, the film will rightfully continue the path Machuca, La Nana, and No have opened for it, and show the world the development of our film industry as it already did in, for example, the Berlin Film Festival," said Chile's Minister of Culture Roberto Ampuero according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The film tells the story of a 58-year old woman Gloria (Garcia) who is divorced and lives alone. She decides to seek out company at a number of social gatherings until she eventually encounters Rodolfo, played by Sergio Hernandez. Their relationship develops, but unexpected challenges start to converge on Gloria and she is forced to confront her darkest secrets.

According to IMDB, Lelio has also directed "El Año del Tigre," "Christmas" and "La Sagrada Familia."
