The Wii U has not exactly set the world on fire, but the console appears to be on the upswing as Nintendo readies to release several big first-party titles along with solid third-party games for the consoles coming before the end of the year. However, gamers have focused more on the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. One person who is focused on the Wii U is Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. He revealed his thoughts to Kotaku about the next gen competition for the Wii U, and he believes the lineup coming up for the Wii U will help it compete with those new consoles:

"I don't think consumers buy hardware just because it's sexy and new ... I think consumers buy hardware because of the experiences they can have on them. That's why, for us, having a strong holiday line-up is so critically important. You know, to a certain extent, how they perform is going to come down to the clarity of their proposition, their execution. There are a lot of variables out there, and that's for my friends over at Microsoft and Sony to go figure out. My job is to drive Nintendo products and make sure we have a great holiday."

Fils-Aime also addressed the fact that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are capable of more graphically impressive games. The executive took a pretty serious shot at the upcoming consoles, saying that good pictures of games do not make consoles successful:

"Systems that generate pretty pictures by themselves aren't selling propositions, and all you need to do is look at the last generation to see the evidence. And that's true whether you look at the home console space or the handheld space. It's not about the graphics by itself. It's about the entire experience."

While there has been huge amounts of attention given to the PlayStation 4's and Xbox One's ability to deliver a bigger and more grand experience for gamers, people tend to forget that the Wii dominated the much more powerful PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 during the last console generation, and the Wii U can always bounce back. Games such as the Wind Waker HD Remake, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and the rumored Mario title should all raise the profile of the Wii U, plus the upcoming price cut for the system should also make the game more successful.
