Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. will be the one training his son, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., for his comeback fight against Brian Vera on Sept. 7 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO's), who's coming off a unanimous decision loss to Sergio Martinez in their middleweight showdown in February, tapped his father to be his head trainer for his fight against Vera (23-6, 14 KO's).

For the first time in his son's 49 fights, Chavez Sr. will have a chance to share his boxing knowledge with Chavez Jr. in an attempt to put his son back in title contention following a loss to Martinez and subsequent nine-month suspension imposed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for marijuana.

"I had always asked my dad to be my corner, formally, but he couldn't for some time because he would get really desperate," Chavez Jr. told ESPN. "I told him, 'If you want to help me, do it formally, because if not, sometimes it just confuses my trainer."

Chavez Sr., who captured belts in three different divisions during his illustrious boxing career, is confident his experience as a fighter will help his son become more successful in the ring.

"I believe I can help much more than down [at ringside]," Chavez Sr. told ESPN. "He says I pressure [him] too much when I'm down there and he says he feels the pressure. He says it's better for him that I'm in his corner. That way I can contribute more with my experience."

However, ESPN Boxing analyst Brian Campbell believes the newly-formed training relationship between the father and son is a train wreck waiting to happen, pointing out the partnership's inherent vulnerability.

Chavez Jr. was also criticized for his lax habit and lack of concentration during training, especially in the build-up heading into the fight with Martinez earlier this year.

Chavez Jr. did not rule out a possibility of training with Boxing Hall of Famer Freddie Roach again, but for now, his father will be the main tactician in his corner.
