Nick Diaz may have chosen one of the worst possible places to announce that he had never paid taxes in his life-with the cameras rolling as he talked following his loss to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158 on Saturday.
When asked if he would stay with his fight team if he decided not to retire from mixed martial arts fighting, Diaz, 29, gave a long-winded and bizarre answer that started out with his surprising declaration that he hadn't ever paid taxes.
"I can't be jumping teams. I just have to invest a little bit more, now that I have a little bit more money," Diaz said. "You know what? I've never paid taxes in my life. I'm probably going to go to jail.
"Nobody wants to hear about that, nobody wants to hear that kind of talk or what's really going on with me," he said. "I might as well as be a kid. I've had fight after fight after fight after fight. You don't know what that does to somebody that didn't graduate high school? You don't understand."
Diaz was visibly sporting a bruise above his left eye after the fight, leading to some speculation that he wasn't in his right state of mind when he made his comment about taxes. Diaz announced that he had retired inside the cage shortly after his fight with St-Pierre, but then recanted during the press conference, where he said he wanted a rematch.
UFC president Dana White only suggested that Diaz pay all of his taxes with the money he earned fighting for UFC.
"At the end of the day, Nick has been in the sport forever. He wanted a shot at the title, he got a shot at the title and he got paid a lot of money for it. What's sad is he better go pay those taxes, a soon as he gets that check," White said according to the Huffington Post.
