Most awards recognize great achievements in music from motion pictures. The Golden Globes are no exception and they not only honor the best musical score, but best song as well.

Best Original Score

The nominees are Mychael Danna (Life of Pi), Alexandre Desplat (Argo), Dario Marinelli (Anna Karenina), Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil (Cloud Atlas), and John Williams (Lincoln). Very few precursors have take the time to dedicate awards to best score and of the films nominated few have actually been awarded by the critics. Desplat won for Argo at the Satellite Awards while Danna won the Los Vegas Film Critics. Twyker also won one from the Austin Film Critics and John Williams won at the Dallas Fort-Worth Film Critics.

John Williams has been nominated for 24 Golden Globes and has won four times. His most recent win was in 2006 for his work on "Memoirs of a Geisha." Desplat has been nominated at the Globes six times and won once in 2006 for his work on "The Painted Veil. Marionelli has obtained two nominations and won in 2008 for "Atonement." Neither of the other two film's composers have ever received Globe nominations.

This category is always the toughest to predict and with no major contender running away with precursors, it is even more tricky to make a solid prediction. The Globes are usually good prognosticators of who will win at the Oscars as they have picked the last five Best Score winners at the Oscars.

Prediction: Desplat will likely win as he has been honored for his three scores (Zero Dark Thirty, Moonrise Kingdom) and has not won at the Globes in years. John Williams could steal a win if "Lincoln" has a big night, but Desplat looks like the winner this year.

Best Original Song

The critics barely award this category, but there is likely only one major contender in this category. The five contestants are as follows:

1. "FOR YOU" - ACT OF VALOR
Music by: Monty Powell, Keith Urban
Lyrics by: Monty Powell, Keith Urban
2. "NOT RUNNING ANYMORE"-STAND UP GUYS
Music by: Jon Bon Jovi
Lyrics by: Jon Bon Jovi
3. "SAFE & SOUND" - THE HUNGER GAMES
Music by: Taylor Swift, John Paul White, Joy Williams, T Bone Burnett
Lyrics by: Taylor Swift, John Paul White, Joy Williams, T Bone Burnett
4. "SKYFALL"-SKYFALL
Music by: Adele, Paul Epworth
Lyrics by: Adele, Paul Epworth
5. "SUDDENLY" - LES MISERABLES
Music by: Claude-Michel Schonberg
Lyrics by: Herbert Kretzmer, Alain Boublil

The only two songs to obtain precursor awards in this category are "Suddenly" and "Skyfall." Either is a solid pick as Adele is a major celebrity the Hollywood Foreign Press would love to award. However, "Les Miserables" is nominated for Best Musical/Comedy, which indicates that the HFP favors that film heavily.

Prediction: "Les Miserables" is bound to take a few awards and this will be one of them.
