Canelo ‘Saul’ Alvarez has yet to officially name his opponent for May 7, the interim fight allowed by the WBC but the search could be over soon.
WBO super welterweight champion Liam Smith has reportedly been offered to face the WBC lineal middleweight champion and according to a report from SkySports, the Liverpool fighter seems to be interested.
"We're contemplating an offer from Alvarez," says Warren. "We're looking at that, we'll think about it and see where we go."
Smith is an interesting opponent though his first title defense wasn’t exactly impressive as mentioned on badlefthook.com. Smith did fend off an overmatched Jimmy Kelly to keep his title but the stakes are obvious different against the Mexican brawler.
Assuming that both camps would come to an agreement, left to be settled is which of the two titles will be on the line. Not to be left out as well is the catchweight where both fighters will face off, an aspect that Alvarez has been known to be careful off.
Alvarez is favored in this tiff should it get done of course. Though it is just an interim fight, Alvarez cannot afford to take Smith lightly. Compared however to earlier names mentioned (Willie Monroe Jr. and Gabriel Rosado), Smith is a hands-down better choice.
Smith was more impressive against Thompson than Kelly and that could be something Alvarez and company may want to study. He is taller and possesses a long jab which could be a problem for Alvarez who has been known to get it on when the opportunity permits.
Incidentally, Smith’s name has also been mentioned as a possible opponent for Amir Khan according to the Daily Mail.
To date, his opponent is the only one missing from the list. Aside from that date, a previous post already mentioned that the fight will take place at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Should the fight be made, the attention will immediately focus on his next fight which should be against Gennady Golovkin.
Golovkin himself is set to fight a month after and is in the same predicament as Alvarez. He has yet to name is an interim foe with Billy Joe Saunders seemingly asking too much money to get in the ring.
The WBC expects both fighters to wind up negotiations by that time with the fight likely to take place somewhere in September. While both are open to facing each other, it seems to be the catchweight issue that has been keeping both camps apart.
The WBC is not expected to respect Alvarez’ request and that is looming as an obstacle for the mega fight between the two popular fighters.
