Fans of the "Bourne" franchise would be happy to know that actor Mat Damon has returned to the series after a lengthy absence.

The actor has confirmed that filming for the fifth installment of the successful franchise has begun in Europe, with several stops including Athens, England and Berlin, to name a few. Screen Rant also reports that the team will be shooting in several areas in the US including Washington D.C, and Las Vegas.

What has happened to Jason Bourne during all these years? According to Cinemablend, the character has been off the grid for nearly 12 years, which could account for his absence during the last "Bourne" film, which starred Jeremy Renner as the title character. While the movie was moderately successful, it did not do as well as it's predecessors.

However, time can be a funny thing in movies. A lot or very little could have happened during the time gap between films. One thing is for certain, however: Bourne's past is still trying to catch up with him.

In the last movie starring Matt Damon, Jason Bourne was supposedly killed, but his body was not recovered nor his death confirmed. This left a very open-ended storyline for Damon and his team to follow.

However, Damon did go on record saying that he was unsure which direction he wanted to take the character, which would account for the lengthy time between the films.

The actor stated that the Renner film gave him several ideas on the path he wanted to take Bourne in, and that the world that he finds himself in needs a change. Damon goes on to say that even just the technology available to Bourne now is completely different from the tech available back in 2004 when the series first started.

Not much else is known about "Bourne 5" except that a few actors and actresses are attached to the film, including Julia Stiles who will be reprising her role as Nicky Parsons, as well as Tommy Lee Jones, who is expected to play the agent in charge of capturing the newly found Bourne.

Paul Greengrass has also been confirmed to return to the series as the director of the film.

"Bourne 5" is set for debut on July 29, 2016.
