According to Manchester Evening News, a 40-feet deep sinkhole shut Mancunian Road as flooding hit Manchester last Friday, August 14. Bringing traffic to a standstill in both directions, the said giant crater appeared at the Ancoats end of the busy commuter route relatively between the junctions with the A6 London Road and Fairfield Street.

Manchester City Council said that diversions and alternate routes have been put in place - encouraging motorists to get rid of the area as much as possible. It is not yet known as to until when Mancunian Road will still be closed to traffic.

Council engineers and United Utilities have promptly evaluated the crater including possible causes and further damages or risks. According to said report, the sinkhole was caused either by a collapsed sewer or a culvert - a pipe which carries water underground.

It is not yet known how long the carriageway will be closed for, but motorists have been advised to avoid the area and diversion have been put in place.

The workman explained that there were concerns it could spread to the other side and he seemed to see both directions being closed for weeks while repair work takes place. Memes have gone viral over social media. Oh my, really scary huh?!

And funny, too...
