Looks like the pundits were right - Samsung did unveil the Note 5 and the S6 Edge+ at the company's Unpacked 2015 event. However, the rumored Edge tablet was nowhere in sight.

Both handsets are big at 5.7 inches, hence the "phablet" moniker. The double phablet launch underscored Samsung's continued love affair with big smartphones, as also affirmed by the South Korean firm's mobile CEO, JK Shin.

"We're still betting big on big screens," Shin declared at the Unpacked event Thursday, according to CNN Money.

"Pre-orders for the devices began Thursday afternoon, and they will be available in AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Best Buy stores Friday for people to play around with," the news source said. "The phones will be on sale in stores in the United States on August 21."

Will Samsung's earlier-than-usual launch pay off? It's been speculated that the company pushed for the August release to ensure sales success ahead of the rumored iPhone launch in September.

But first, an overview of the top features of both handsets.

The Note 5 has better camera (front cam is at 5MP) but lesser battery capacity at 3000 mAh. It can be recalled that the Note 4 had a 3220 mAh battery.

Further, the new model is a bit smaller and even thinner than its predecessor, with an improved "S Pen" stylus and two storage options, 32GB or 64GB.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ has a screen that is curved on both sides and is very light. Although it has the same camera specs, it has "better filming and broadcasting." It also has a 3000mAh battery capacity.

It's also been revealed that an off-contract 64GB Edge+ will cost $915 (AT&T) or $888 (Sprint). It will set you back $400 (AT&T) or $450 (Sprint) if you will get the device with a two-year agreement.

For the Note 5, you may have to pay at least $250 for the 32GB model on a 2-year contract with AT&T.

"A hundred dollars more will get you a 64 GB version. Without a commitment, expect to hand over $740 or $840 at AT&T, and about $20 less at Sprint," CNN said.

It's worth noting that Stuff observed those leaks about the Note 5 were indeed genuine.

"The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 indeed comes with full metal-and-glass construction for a seriously slick, premium device that's very much in line with Samsung's new design language found in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge," the site said. "Besides being made of glass instead of its predecessor's faux leather, the Note 5's rear end is subtly curved at the sides, letting the phone sit very comfortably indeed when held."
