DJ, music producer and rapper Diplo revealed that Selena Gomez and Zedd's relationship was a fake. In an interview, Katy Perry's ex claimed that Zedd's romance with Selena was a big marketing move.

Rumors of Gomez and Zedd's romance surfaced earlier this year. Although the two did not officially confirm their status, their Instagram posts and "flirty" replies via social media were enough for fans to speculate.

They did a collaboration with the song, "I Want You To Know," but soon after its release, their romance rumor fizzled. It seems like the relationship already came crashing without confirmation of it launching from the beginning.

Rumors that the romance might just be a marketing plot made more sense when Diplo spoke about it on Radio.com. The 36-year-old DJ had a few harsh comments about Zedd's "True Colors" record. He said that although he doesn't have anything against Zedd personally, it disappoints him how the 22-year-old settled for mediocre music and relied on marketing to be able to sell records. While discussing that, he also brushed on the topic that even the romance with Gomez was fake and it was purely for marketing strategy.

"I'm actually not enemies with Zedd by any means. I just think that he came from such a cool place, and now he's been pegged as a money-maker for a major label to do EDM, which to me isn't even a genre. But they've pegged him for that, they've marketed him, even the fake relationship with Selena Gomez, all the things to sell records took away from the music. He's an amazing producer and good songwriter. I just feel like...I was hoping he'd come out of the scene and do something," Diplo said.

E Online reported that Gomez and Zedd were always just friends. However, their Instagram posts sparked rumors that they may be going steady. Adding more fuel to the fire, Diplo once tweeted Selena Gomez a picture of him while hugging Zedd with a caption that read, "@SelenaGomez watch out."

With his recent comments regarding Gomez and Zedd, the DJ might get a lot of hate from the Selenators. If he does, it wouldn't be his first time to have a feud with an army of fans. According to Daily Mail, Diplo caused a massive backlash after he made negative comments about Taylor Swift. After tasting the wrath of the Swifties or what he described as "worse than the North Korean army," he became apologetic.

"All I know is don't ever get into a feud with Taylor Swift. She has like 50 million people that will die for her," Diplo said.

At present, Selena and Zedd are single and whether they were in a relationship earlier this year doesn't matter as much now.
