One Direction has captivated the hearts of millions but a surprising fact was revealed by their stylist about their style inspiration.

According to Independent, the pop band's look was mainly inspired by the Spice Girls, a popular 90's girl band.

After appearing on the UK version of "X Factor" five years ago, the boys have transformed from being "nervous kids in baggy jeans, unlaced gym boots and confused neckwear into self-assured, stylish rockstars with one Chelsea boot-clad foot firmly planted in the fashion world," according to Jezebel.

So, how did this happen?

Their stylist, Caroline Watson, was the mastermind behind the transformation. Style and looks are big factors of the band's success. Watson said she is in-charge of "everything."

"You know, I was given a blank canvas, so to speak... I didn't know anything about One Direction, about them being on X Factor. I didn't know how they were put together or anything. So it was kind of good because I was coming into it blindly; I had no biased opinion," she said.

She went on to say that she pitched the band's style concept, which is to be the "male equivalent to the Spice Girls." To this day, her decision proves to be a success.

"Everyone wore different things and no two girls looked the same. I wanted to create that with the boys," Watson noted.

So, with different identities and different looks, the band was able to capture every girl's fantasy guy.

"Niall was always going to be my sporty boy; Zayn was always the cool, mysterious one that was quite street but could be quite high fashion at the same time; Harry was bow ties, blazers, that guy that you want to bring home to your mum; Liam was the boy next door. I mean, now, Liam's transitioned and completely grown into this whole new, sexy guy," One Direction's stylist explained.

The band has come a long way from where they used to be. They already figured out their sense of style. Watson said it is important for them to have their own identity. She wanted for the boys to have a model and rock star direction instead of just being stuck on "that cheesy pop boy band" genre.

Glamour Fashion has classified the boys' new fashion styles, according to Watson.

Louis "is very laid-back in his style, [and] he's quite into vintage-looking stuff. What I love about him the most is he's not afraid to turn it up for the red carpet."

Zayn will "take the most risks, and he'll definitely push it, but it works. He likes his Dr. Martens."

Niall "is getting into boots now, so I'm happy. He's getting older, and certain things he wants to be smarter about, [but it's] still relaxed, not too over the top."

Harry "will always be Harry, and he will always do his thing. He's been undoing his buttons since the first single! He's coming into his own now, but it's always been like that. He's just got a lot older and a lot hotter, I guess."

Liam "was the boy next door. Now Liam's transitioned and completely grown into this whole new, sexy guy. When I first started working with them, he wouldn't want to wear any color, any patterns, or stripes. [Then] he came into his own, and I was like, 'This boy has got some confidence! I can work with that!'"
