Despite the growing social media popularity of the NBA and baseball, there is no doubt that Americans are still very passionate about football.

Twitter, through its data team, took a candid shot at measuring the popularity levels of the 32 NFL teams in the US.

The social networking site released an interactive map which plotted allegiance of fans to each of the NFL teams by counting their followers on their respective Twitter accounts, details USA Today Sports.

"It's an imperfect measure, for sure, but it's a nifty interface and a lot of fun!" notes Mother Jones about the Twitter interactive map.

The Twitter data revealed that the Dallas Cowboys from the NFC is the most popular NFL team in America with at least one dominate country in 22 states, reports USA Today Sports.

Now on its seventh week, the Twitter interactive map also disclosed that the Dallas Cowboys are the most mentioned team in the social site, with Seattle Seahawks coming in at a distant second.

The San Francisco 49ers, the Denver Broncos, and the New England Patriots round out the top five most popular NFL team in Twitter.

Cleveland Cavalier's LeBron James even congratulated the Cowboys for its Twitter stature by tweeting: "Ballgame!! @dallascowboys #WeDemBoyz #StriveForGreatness #WhoWannaRollWithTheWinners"

In terms of the most popular NFL player, Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos was the hands down choice. Percy Harvin, who was just traded by Seattle Seahawks to the New York Jets last week, came in at a distant second.

USA Today Sports also noted that among the 50 states of the US, it is in Florida where there is no specific team that dominates the rest of the pack in terms of following.

A total of 12 NFL teams rank high in terms of preference among Florida football fans. This prompted USA Today Sports to dub the state as a "melting pot of football allegiances."

Apart from the Cowboys, the Broncos, the Seahawks, the Miami Dolphins, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New Orleans Saints, the Green Bay Packers, the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chicago Bears, and Atlanta Falcons, all have significant following in Florida observes the report.

The USA Today Sports also noted from the Twitter interactive map that there is no county in America where fans of Oakland Raiders dominate. But the team nonetheless is the second most popular team in the state of California behind the San Francisco 49ers.
