This is one pirate with a heart -- a heart for Mother Nature and the arts, that is.

It has been recently learned that "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor Geoffrey Rush has been invested with a Companion of the Order of Australia citation earlier this month, as reported by The Australian.

Perhaps you may be wondering what the Aussie actor did to merit such an honor. Did he save someone during a conflict? Did he make a very generous contribution to a national organization?

According to Kpop Starz, the distinction was given to him for championing the Tasmanian Wilderness Welfare.

"The campaign seeks to pressure the federal government into dropping its plan to delist 74,000 hectares of wildnerness. The final ruling will be handed down next month when the committee meets in Qatar," the entertainment news site said.

Rush was also recognized "for the services of the arts."

"The Toowoomba native, who has won an Oscar, Emmy and Tony, added another feather on his cap with the distinction due to his work in promoting Australian talent," Kpop Starz added. He has been active in supporting the Empire Theater in his place of origin.

The Aussie actor has been previously named Australian of the Year in 2012, not because of his acting awards, but for his behind-the-scenes work, "quietly mentoring young actors and supporting arts companies," as reported by The Daily Telegraph.

The 62-year-old Aussie resident also is known to be the first Australian-born actor to win an Oscar, which he received for his performance in 1996's "Shine." He was recently seen in "The King's Speech" as speech therapist Lionel Logue and, more famously, as Captain Barbossa in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie franchise.

Perhaps you may now be wondering whether he will be back in "Dead Men Tell No Tales" to reprise his role. It has not yet been officially confirmed whether Rush will be donning his pirate boots yet again for another run with Captain Jack Sparrow.
