The drug trafficker, Aurelio Casillas, is not dead and after tricking Mexican authorities, he comes back to life full of rage and vengeance, but with the main objective of recovering his family.

Casillas' death was part of an elaborate plan which allowed him to free himself from the harassment of authorities, move around freely and recover his empire with might.

In the first season, Aurelio Casillas is shown to start off as a humble man, who slowly becomes a drug trafficker in Mexico, building one of the most dangerous cartels of its time, the Juárez cartel, which made him one of the most wanted men in the United States and Mexico.

Casillas came to be known as "El Señor de los Cielos" for his modus operandi in which he transported drugs in a jet fleet from northern Mexico; however, persecution from DEA agents make him reconsider to start over, undergoing plastic surgery which would change his face and start over. The first season ends saying the drug trafficker is dead, and in this second season, Aurelio will come back, looking for Cherma Vargas.

"El Señor de los Cielos" is a television show that references the life of drug trafficker Amado Carrillo Fuentes, leader of the Mexican Juárez cartel who was nicknamed as such. Carrillo Fuentes was one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Mexico and the United States for being one of the main leaders of organized crime in the border area between the two countries.

"El Señor de los Cielos" died in a hospital in Mexico City on Feb. 5, 1997 after undergoing plastic surgery to change his face.

After his death, a series of theories flooded the Mexican media in 1997. The official version said that Carrillo Fuentes underwent facial plastic surgery and liposuction, and died there. However, other versions says that the "lord of the skies" say he was guarded by two body guards who were inside the surgery room and that during the surgery he was smothered with a pillow, others say he was tortured to death, and another version says he commited suicide.
