The U.S. Open witnessed three top seeded players advance to the next round and one major upset involving No. 2-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska this Labor Day.

American Serena Williams, No. 4-ranked, defeated Andrea Hlavackova, from the Czech Republic, in two easy matches 6-0 and 6-0 during her morning match. Williams, however, did not have any luck during her evening doubles match with sister Venus and was defeated by Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova in two sets 6-1 and 6-4.

According to the New York Times, Williams will play against No. 12-ranked Ana Ivanovic during her singles quarterfinals.

One opponent Williams will not have to worry about facing is No. 2-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland. Radwanksa was upset by No. 20-ranked Roberta Vinci from Italy in a two set defeat 6-1 and 6-4.

"It's always disappointing, especially when you're losing in a Grand Slam," Radwanska told ESPN. "I think I'll have to leave it at that right now."

Matches on the men's side were just as exciting, with a victory from No. 3-ranked Andy Murray over Canadian Milos Raonic in three sets 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2.

"Today was by far my best match of the tournament," Murray told reporters on Monday. The Scotsman will play against Croatian Marin Cilic during his quarterfinal match, the New York Times reported.

On Monday night, No. 1-ranked Roger Federer was given a walkover to the quarterfinals when his opponent, American Mardy Fish, withdrew from the tournament on doctor's orders. According to the New York Times, Fish has been suffering from various heart ailments although no reason was given for his early departure.

In a statement released on Monday, Fish said, "I was reluctant to do so but am following medical advisement. I had a good summer and look forward to resuming my tournament schedule in the fall."

Federer will play against No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych during his quarterfinal match, the AFP reported.

Tuesday will mark the commencement of the women's singles matches, with No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka playing against No. 7-ranked Samantha Stosur and No. 3-ranked Maria Sharapova playing against No. 11-ranked Marion Bartoli. No. 2-seeded Novack Djokovic, No. 20-seeded Andy Roddick and No. 4-seeded David Ferrer will also play on Tuesday.
