Former Disney star Hilary Duff and former NHL hockey player husband, Mike Comrie called it quits.

According to Duff's rep, the two  "mutually decided [on] an amicable separation," adding that, "they remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."

The the now 26-year-old Duff and 33-year-old Comrie, who were blessed with their son, Luca Cruz, began dating in 2007, and in 2010 got married in Santa Barbara, California.

A source told People Magazine that "There was no major incident - no big event between the two of them. They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends."

According to New York Daily, the couple were on good terms. Duff even shared an Instagram photo of herself and Comrie celebrating New Year's Eve together. They were also seen in Disneyland a week earlier when they took him to his first trip to the happiest place on Earth.

The source also added that the couple will co-parent their 21-month-old son. "They're still going to go to the park together."

In a previous interview, Duff had nothing bad to say about Comrie's parenting skills. "He's an amazing father. He's so patient and loving and involved. He's all the things that I knew that he would be."

As for how they broke up, the source said that it was not a rash decision. "It's something [Hilary] thought through. She really does care about him and he really does care about her."

Duff tweeted, "Mike and I are sitting here, we are so appreciative for all of your kindness & well wishes. Not an easy day but we're getting thru it together."
