A video of a marine biologist in the Faroe Islands attempting to cut open the stomach of a dead whale, only to be covered in its entrails in a shocking explosion, has gone viral, with more than 100,000 views on YouTube.

The video captures the moment when the organs of the cetacean explode right in front of the man as he attempts to inspect the carcass.

According to The NY Daily News, marine biologist Bjarni Mikkelsen attempted to cut open the whale's stomach, when the compressed gases that had accumulated in its abdomen caused the animal's guts to literally explode.

The enormous whale had died of natural causes and the liquids and gases generated by decomposition caused the peculiar incident, according to Sin Embargo.

The Daily Mail reports that the marine biologist had attempted to cut open the whale's carcass to recover its skeleton to exhibit it at a museum.

Sin Embargo notes that several organizations such as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Greenpeace have denounced the continuous massacres of whales in the region.

Whale killing is common practice in the Faroe Islands, which are located in the northern region of the Atlantic, between Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.
