The Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset is one of the most promising VR breakthroughs in quite some time, and could represent the technology's best hope for breaking into the mainstream gaming world. However, in a new interview with TechRadar, Palmer Luckey, the inventor and founder of the Oculus Rift, revealed than he feels like consoles are not a suitable platform for the technology.

Luckey explained that the tech found in the Oculus Rift is very advanced and new, and because consoles are locked into the same specs for many years, they may not be ready for what the Oculus Rift can accomplish.

"Consoles are too limited for what we want to do...We're trying to make the best virtual reality device in the world and we want to continue to innovate and upgrade every year - continue making progress internally - and whenever we make big jumps we want to push that to the public..." Luckey told TechRadar.

"The problem with consoles in general is that once they come out they're locked to a certain spec for a long, long time. Look at the PCs that existed eight years ago. There have been so many huge advances since then. Now look at the VR hardware of today. I think the jump we're going to see in the next four or five years is going to be massive, and already VR is a very intensive thing, it requires rendering at high resolutions at over 60 frames a second in 3D."

In fact, Luckey flat out stated that he doubts that any platform other than PC will be able to handle the technology as it is today:

"It's hard to imagine them running a VR experience that's on par with PC...What we're most excited about - really the core direction of our company - is trying to make something that works on platforms that are moving quickly and that are continuously getting more powerful, and consoles are not those."

While it may appear that the Oculus Rift is not going to come to any of the next-gen consoles, PlayStation 4 owners may have their own Sony made VR headsets sometime in the future. Sony has filed patents recently concerning its own VR technology, so perhaps the company does not feel consoles are as limited as Luckey believes them to be.
