The second-generation Microsoft Surface tablets are officially on sale, but if the company's midnight launch were an indication, sales could be an issue.

As Latinos Post reported, Microsoft held midnight launches across 10 Microsoft retail stores in locations ranging from Atlanta, Boston, Miami, and New York, to name a few.

According to a new report, the Microsoft Store at the Westfield Center in San Francisco, Calif. was another location hosting a midnight launch. CNET's Nick Statt reported approximately 50 people were in attendance by the time doors opened at 10 p.m. local time while the retailer played music at loud levels.

Statt added, "It was an admittedly small crowd -- when compared with the standard Apple devotion, albeit for the more-hyped iPhone launches -- though the line remained steady even as more and more attendees filed into the store."

Although the attendance at the San Francisco location slowly grew, apparently not many were set on buying either Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2. The report noted many attendees were friends of employees with "no intention" of buying either second-generation Surface tablet.

Thirty minutes following the midnight launch, the sales lines at the Westfield Center Microsoft Store were empty.

The Oct. 22 release date coincided with 22 markets including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States. China, meanwhile, will get to see the tablets by early November.

As seen on the online Microsoft Store, the Surface 2's 32GB model is priced at $449 while the 64GB has a price tag of $549.

The Surface Pro 2's 64GB model will cost the consumer $899. The 128GB model is priced at $999. The 256GB and 512GB are priced at $1,299 and $1,799, respectively.
