A Shanghai couple has been accused of selling their baby daughter in order to purchase an Apple iPhone.

The couple faces prosecution for alleged human trafficking, says Chinese media reports. According to ABC News, the couple posted "Adopt a Baby" an asked between $4,900 and $8,200. It is unknown how much the couple ultimately received.

According to China's Jiefand Daily newspaper, the couple's names are Mr. Tend and Ms. Zhang and both defended their actions.

"We did not send the baby off for a profit, but to give the child a better life of security," the couple stated, via Jiefand Daily.

The couple allegedly hoped another family would be able to provide better care for the infant, as they are already parents of two older children.

The couple reportedly chose to do a home birth and exchanged the child for cash. The payment was deposited in the bank on the same day. According to sales records, the couple went on a shopping spree with the money, which included shoes and an iPhone.

According to ABC News, sporting an Apple device in China provides a "sign of status" and "prestige and class." A second example of the ABC News statement involved a 17-year-old in China selling his kidney for an Apple device. Seven people were sent to jail for buying the boy's kidney.

Coincidentally, Apple announced new products on Oct. 22 including the iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad Air, and MacBook updates.
