Microsoft's Windows Phone platform witnessed the largest percentage increase among the top mobile operating system market share in France while Google is on top in Japan.

France:

In the latest figures provided by Kantar Worldpanel, Microsoft's Windows Phone smartphone operating system saw an increase of 5.2 percent during the three months ending in August 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.

The increase for Windows Phone shifts the Microsoft mobile platform from fourth place to third place in the French statistics by Kantar Worldpanel.

By the end of August 2013, Microsoft accounted for 10.8 percent of the smartphone operating system market share, up from 5.6 percent during the three months ending in August last year.

Apple's iOS also saw an increase in their market share performance by four percentage points. The increase for iOS gave the Apple smartphone platform a finish of 17.5 percent by the end of August this year, which is up from the 13.5 percent from the same period in 2012.

The iOS and Windows Phone increase, however, was not enough to topple Google Android. The Google mobile operating system maintained first place with 63.3 percent of the smartphone platform market share during the three months ending in August 2013 in France.

Unlike iOS and Windows Phone, Android saw an increase of less than one percentage point, with 0.6 percent.

Round up the top five is BlackBerry, which lost four percentage points leading to a 4.2 percent finish by the end of August 2013.

Japan:

It was a narrow competition between two mobile operating systems in Japan and only 1.2 percentage points made the difference. In the end, Android landed first placed in the Japanese mobile operating system market share, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

Android finished the three months ending in August 2013 with 48.6 percent, while iOS finished second with 47.4 percent.

Windows Phone also narrowly edged out BlackBerry for third place by a difference of 0.5 percentage points.

Windows Phone finished the three months ending in August 2013 with 0.8 percent to BlackBerry's 0.3 percent.

Mobile operating system percentages from the same period in 2012 were not provided.
