It's looking more and more like Google will finally unveil the brand new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system in the coming weeks. How soon, you ask? According to the latest reports, it could be as early as Oct. 15.

Website CNET UK claims that Oct. 15 is the date to put the money on based on talk around the water cooler at Google Launchpad, a Google-sponsored event designed to help start ups. Google has not sent out any press invites for an Oct. 15 event, and CNET UK does warn that the date could "just be the usual idle speculation that flows around every major phone launch." With the date approaching, it shouldn't be long before the rumor is put to rest.

Still, this isn't the first time the Oct. 15 date has been thrown around. It's been rumored for a while now that Google plans on unveiling a new Nexus 5 smartphone alongside Android 4.4 KitKat sometime in October. Google typically pairs a new Android launch with a new product launch, and the timing would allow Google to generate public interest just before the busy fall holiday shopping season.

Not much is known about Android 4.4 KitKat. Leaked photos show that the operating system will attempt to brighten up the look and feel of Android, but other than that, it's hard to tell what major new changes Google will be bringing to the table.
