Fall is upon us, and so are the high caliber television shows that come with it. The biggest and baddest series make their return to the limelight while highly anticipated newcomers do their best to rope in fans and climb the ranks. This year in particular has introduced a handful of new series, but none has critics raving like “Masters of Sex.” The name alone is enough to attract a formidable fan base, but thankfully its content proves equally as riveting.

The new Showtime drama uncovers the exploits of, well, sex. Martin Sheen and Lizzy Caplan costar as Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson, who dive deep into the fundamental basics of sex and the body’s physiological and psychological reactions to sexual behavior. Their research serves as fuel for the sexual revolution of the 1960s that spawned forms of birth control and a more sexually liberal society.

To provide some context, Masters continually advises his sexually frustrated patients to cheat on their spouses. Johnson, a divorced mother of two, is an independent woman who’s determined to break the mold of the 1958 woman and learns to enjoy sex on her own terms, a rarity in that day and age.

For fans who caught last week’s premiere episode and are already rearing for more, TVLine reports that Episode 3 on October 13 features bunny sex, guest appearance by Mae Whiteman (“Parenthood”) and Greg Grunberg (“The Client List”), and also reveals on male character’s true sexual identity as a homosexual.

Masters of Sex” premiered last Sunday on Showtime and drew roughly one million viewers, tying the series premiere of “Homeland” as the second biggest debut for a Showtime series behind this summer’s “Ray Donovan.” Be sure to tune in next Sunday for your dose of rousing education.
