Don't let the tranquil paradise fool you: on the upcoming season of "Hawaii Five-0," the characters will never be far from danger.

On the fourth season, the characters will lose something that is very important to them, TV Guide confirms. It will also be revealed early on as to why Kono (Grace Park) is still very important in the storyline (TV Guide hints that the storyline involves "serious danger").

McGarrett (Alex O'Louglin) will be determined to find out Wo Fat's (Mark Dacascos) connection to his mother. Although he tries to get answers from people who may know about the connection, no one will give him a straight answer. Therefore, he decides to take initiative and investigate his hunch on his own.

But first, on the season premiere, McGarett helps Wo Fat escape, which results in a calamitous fallout. Alex O'Louglin told TV Guide why McGarrett helps Wo Fat.

"He wants answers about his mother," O'Louglin said. "And as far as he's concerned, his mother's been dead for 20 years. There's something going on with Wo Fat and Doris McGarrett and he can't get to the bottom of it, and so he goes to see him and we know what happens. ... For McGarrett now, in a way, if he just let Wo Fat get killed, it'd be a sort of thorn out of his side, and it would be something he doesn't have to worry about anymore. But there's so many unanswered questions."

O'Louglin said that McGarrett cannot get past why Doris (Christine Lahti) let Wo Fat escape last season. "It's not beyond imagination that they could be half-brothers. That's kind of eating him up. He's obsessed. ... He's so driven by this. If he thinks he can get an answer about something that can help solve some of that stuff and help fill some of the black holes that kind of leave him feeling so empty every day, he's going to do it no matter what," O'Louglin said.

McGarrett will have an encounter with his mother again this season, but, according to O'Louglin, he just can't trust her or believe anything she says.

As for McGarrett and Catherine (Michelle Borth), showrunner Peter M. Lenkov told TVLine that Catherine will be "going through a life change" when she leaves the Navy to work for her ex's private security company. Although Steve gives Catherine his blessing to make the change, he may regret his nonchalant attitude about the situation.

"McGarrett, not being the jealous type, is going to insist that she take the job - and he's going to end up regretting that," Lenkov said. "You'll see McGarrett a little vulnerable, which is fun."

Lenkov added that "big changes" are coming that will affect McGarrett and Catherine's relationship. "I think anyone McGarrett cares about unfortunately could be a liability to him. He'd sacrifice himself in a moment for someone he cares about. There may not be anyone he cares for as much as Catherine," Lenkov revealed.

Chi McBride will play old-school character Captain Lou Grover on the new season. Grover will have a rocky relationship with McGarrett due to a very bad first impression. "I break the law, and he's not going to stand for that s---," O'Louglin said. "There's no way. It's a fiery, combative relationship. ... But it's good. My suspicion is that these characters are going to have more in common than they think, or that they'd like to think and that we would expect."

Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) will still be grieving after the loss of his wife Malia in season three. There may also be some flashbacks of Chin's early days on the police force, revealing that the choices he made had "unintended consequences," according to Lenkov. Chin Ho will also feel Kono's absence the most acutely. "His drive at the top of the season is to make it safe for her [Kono] and Adam to return," Lenkov said.

The fourth season of "Hawaii Five-0" premieres tonight, Friday, September 27 on CBS.
