Microsoft's Windows Phone encountered the most gains in the smartphone operating system market share in Australia during the three months ending in July 2013, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

In Kantar's latest figures, the Windows Phone mobile platform increased its market share percentage, but it was not enough to topple Google's Android or Apple's iOS.

Android continued to reign as king in Australia as the Google mobile operating system finished with 62 percent by the end of July this year. Despite placing first in Kantar's rankings, Android did fall 0.9 percent in comparison to the three months ending in July 2012.

Apple's iOS placed 33.9 percent behind Android. Despite the steep percent difference against the Google mobile platform, iOS finished second with 28.1 percent. In addition, the iOS saw the least percentage lost against the main four Kantar provided, with 0.1 percent.

Windows Phone, despite the 2.4 percent gain in the smartphone market share, maintained its third place position. Windows Phone received a total of 7 percent by the end of July 2013, up from the 4.6 percent the Microsoft mobile operating system accounted for by July 2012.

Symbian finished at fourth place with 1.1 percent, but it didn't get there without losing 0.7 percent in comparison to the same three months last year.

Finally, BlackBerry placed fifth again. BlackBerry went from 1.4 percent during the three months ending in July 2012 to 0.3 percent within the same period this year.
