The world was shocked to learn that Ben Affleck would be the next man to don the bat suit for Zack Snyder's upcoming "Batman vs. Superman."

Numerous fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions and things got ugly fast.

@SteveAmiri wrote, "Someone needs to explain to Ben Affleck that Batman isn't about a guy that's been bitten by a radioactive baseball bat at Fenway."

@dianejeanty added, "This is worse than when they picked Ryan Reynolds to play Green Lantern. Ben Affleck, really? #Batman."

‏@jacqsays was equally negative and wrote, "BEN AFFLECK AS #BATMAN I HATE EVERYTHING WHYYYYYYYYY?!????????? #christianbaleillalwaysloveyou."

@FunnyGooner invoked an Arsenal joke and added, "Ben Affleck playing the new Batman is like Arsenal playing Scott Parker for creativity. Everything is ruined."

@daisy_bandit also the hated the choice and brought up Affleck's last turn as a Superhero. "UGH. DAREDEVIL CANNOT BE BATMAN. "@BuzzFeed: Ben Affleck Is The New Batman https://variety.com/2013/film/news/ben-affleck-is-the-new-batman-1200586881/ ..."

@TheVineonline wrote, "BEN AFFLECK IS BATMAN? THIS STINKS!" No @paulverhoeven won't calm down. https://www.thevine.com.au/entertainment/news/ben-affleck-is-batman-this-stinks-20130823-264613/ ...

However, some fans were more open to the idea.

@gabeojeda took a more pragmatic approach and said, "Not sure if I'm fully sold on Ben Affleck playing #Batman but he's done well for himself past couple years so I'm gonna wait & see."

@scottEweinberg congratulated the Oscar-winner on his latest job and said, "Hey @benaffleck, even Oscar-winning handsome dudes with amazing wives who get to play Batman have feelings. Ignore the haters"

Affleck recently won an Oscar for his film "Argo." He took on the role of the superhero Daredevil in a 2003 film of the same name and was generally given the benefit of the doubt by critics.

"Affleck persuades us of the pain of sightlessness and supersensitive hearing, although writer/director Johnson's scrappy construction fails him and everyone else as the showdown approaches," wrote Time Out London.

The Chicago Reader was not as happy with Affleck in "Daredevil" and noted, "Affleck's rigid performance is a perpetual drag on the story. "

"Batman vs. Superman" is slated for a 2015 release date and will also feature Henry Cavill, Diane Lane and Amy Adams.
