Production for the first iPad mini with Retina Display is reportedly ramping up, according to latest reports.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has claimed the second-generation of the 7.9-inch iPad mini will have high-resolution display panels, citing industry sources.

The WSJ added that the back cover of the iPad mini 2 might feature multiple color options. The decision to have "multiple color back covers" is reportedly part of Apple's new direction in terms of design strategy. The alleged fresh approach has been speculated in terms of the rumored low-cost iPhone, which has been reported to have different color variants as well.

The idea of adding the Retina Display onto the iPad mini has apparently strengthened following Google's launch of the Nexus 7 tablet, which features a high-resolution screen of 1,920x1,200 pixels.

In regards to the tablet's release, a specific launch date was not provided, however, it was suggested that production will continue into the fourth quarter this year.

As Latinos Post reported, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo projected the iPad mini 2 will get a March or April 2014 release date. According to Kuo, the delay of the second-generation 7.9-inch iPad mini is due to demand for the Retina Display. The size of the battery may be another concern if Retina Display is added due to the small body of the tablet.

A report from DigiTimes, citing "industry sources," stated LG Display is producing panels for the iPad mini 2. LG Display is allegedly "making new headway" in Retina Display production for the 7.9-inch tablet. The sources familiar with LG Display, however, stated 2 to 3 million units panels will be shipped ahead of its October release date.
