CBS News has announced another shake-up for their morning show CBS This Morning with the addition of Norah O'Donnell as its third co-host.
O'Donnell will replace Erica Hill, and will join fellow co-hosts Charlie Rose and Gayle King in the fall.
"This is a very exciting development for our morning program and for all of CBS News," said CBS News Chairman and 60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeff Fager. "Norah is an accomplished reporter with all the skills for the job. She's a hard worker who knows her story and, as she has shown time after time at the White House, she can think on her feet on live television."
According to a statement by CBS, Hill is in discussions for a new role. It is unknown if Hill's new role will be for the morning show or for another news program within CBS.
O'Donnell served as CBS News' chief White House correspondent since June 2011, but will leave the position for CBS This Morning. O'Donnell will continue as the substitute anchor for Face the Nation.
"Norah thrives on the kind of original reporting and newsmaker interviews that are the hallmark of CBS News and CBS This Morning," said CBS News President David Rhodes. "She is the perfect addition to the best morning news program on television."
CBS This Morning made its debut back in January, replacing The Early Show, in efforts to raise its lackluster ratings.
For the week of July 16, CBS This Morning averaged 2.3 million viewers, with 877,000 viewers in the coveted 25-54 key demographic that advertisers look for. The ratings are about half of what rival ABC's Good Morning America scored.
Before joining CBS, O'Donnell was a fixture on NBC News since 1999 as a correspondent for Today and MSNBC.
The swap of O'Donnell and Hill comes almost a month since Ann Curry departed Today in what many refer to as a move to boost ratings. Time will tell if O'Donnell's addition will give CBS This Morning a boost from third place.
