Sony has announced that Naughty Dog's The Last of Us has become the fastest-selling PlayStation 3 game of 2013. The title has sold over 3.4 million copies in just three weeks.

Sony confirmed that the figure exceeded the sales expectations for the game across both retail and digital sales. The numbers are especially impressive considering The Last of Us launched as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, and therefore did not benefit from sales on other platforms, such as the Xbox 360 and the PC.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida commented that the "sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us."

"The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example," he concluded.

The Last of Us was released on June 14 to widespread critical and fan acclaim. To date, it has received over 50 perfect scores from various gaming publications, and currently holds a 95 on Metacritic and a 95.05 percent on GameRankings. It is currently the highest rated PlayStation 3 game of 2013 on Metacritic, and the second highest rated PlayStation 3 title of 2013 on GameRankings, followed closely behind by BioShock Infinite.

In addition to being the fastest-selling PlayStation 3 game, The Last of Us was also the biggest video game launch of 2013 so far, selling over 1.3 million copies in its first week of release.

Neither Naughty Dog nor Sony have commented on a sequel. However, with these sorts of numbers, you have to imagine that both are considering the possibility of another game set in this universe.
