J.J Abrams stated that he has never shot a film on digital and has created speculation on how he will approach the latest "Star Wars" movie.

During the "produced by" conference, the newly appointed "Star Wars Episode 7" director revealed that he has never used a digital camera for his films because he does not get the same effect as shooting on film. He stated, "I have not yet shot a movie digitally. Film is the thing I am most comfortable with. If film were to go away - and digital is challenging it - then the standard for the highest, best quality would go away."

He added that when using CGI effects, filming gives it a warmer look. "Also, with all the CG, it was important to me that it was as warm and human and analogue as possible," he said. "It may not be obvious to many of the people who saw it, but I think it is more important than people know."

The news comes as a surprise as the last two "Star Wars" films "Episode 2" and "Episode 3" were shot on digital cameras; Star Wars creator George Lucas believed digital filmmaking was the future of the industry. Additionally Disney has shot its latest tentpole films such as "Iron Man 3" and "Thor: The Dark World" on digital cameras. Whether or not Abrams shoots on film will reveal whether the director or the studio has the greatest creative control for the upcoming franchise.

"Star Wars Episode 7" is currently in pre-production with Abrams directing the film, Kathleen Kennedy producing and Michael Arndt writing the script. Abrams' frequent editing team of Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey are already confirmed for the space opera while Darren Gilford is confirmed to be production designer. Costume designer Michael Kaplan will create the wardrobe.

The latest installment is slated to begin production in January 2014 and will be released in 2015.

George Lucas has stated that he will not work on the upcoming film. Read More HERE.
