As the long summer months drag on, fans of Shonda Rhimes' hit political drama 'Scandal' dig and scrounge for dirt on the forthcoming third season. As the details unfold, they can piece together a better idea of what to expect. In recent 'Scandal' news, it looks like Jake Ballard will play a major role in Olivia Pope's life for longer than expected, much to several fans' chagrin.

Scott Foley, who plays Jake, has been promoted to a series regular, according to TVLine. "I'm thrilled to join such a talented, enthusiastic and professional group of people." Foley said. "Shonda and company have created a troupe of layered complex characters and to be able to be part of that is both exciting and humbling."

Foley originally joined the show towards the end of season 2 as the recurring character Jake, who took on a rather mysterious role. Upon his arrival, Foley claimed, "there's a possibility of permanence" and added that he and Rhimes had discussed the idea of sticking around for season 3 in a more prominent role. "Shonda and I have talked about something longer," he said. "I love this show, and I'd love to be there as long as they'll have me."

Many "Scandal" fans expressed their anger with Rhimes' decision.

"Sorry NOOOOOOOOOPE I'M NOT HAPPY FOR THIS I DO NOT LIFE HIS CHARACTER ON HERE SO NOPE I AM NOT PLEASED UGGGGHH CAN HE JUST GO AWAY," wrote Mary Burch on TVLine.

Others took more kindly to the news.

"Yes!! This makes me very happy," wrote Sunny.

"I love Jake!!! I'm so happy he's staying. He is hot!!! YES Shonda!! Thank you!!" wrote Dorothy.

Whether fans agree or disagree with Rhimes' decision, Foley is here to stay and will be a force in Olivia's life throughout season 3 and on.

"Scandal" will return to ABC in the fall.
