The first quarter of 2013 shows mixed numbers for Apple in both smartphone and mobile operating system market shares.

In the latest figures by comScore, Inc., Apple saw a 2.7 percent increase from December 2012's smartphone market share. In the three months ending in March, Apple captured 39 percent of smartphone subscribers, comfortably topping Samsung's 21.7 percent. Samsung also saw an increase in smartphone subscribers by 0.7 percent from December 2012's 21 percent.

Rounding up the top five, HTC, Motorola, and LG saw decreases compared to their respective December figures.

HTC lost 1.2 percent, going from 10.2 percent to 9 percent. Motorola went from December's 9.1 percent to 8.5 percent, a point change of 0.6 percent. Meanwhile LG, finished in March with 6.8 percent, down 0.3 percent.

Overall, 136.7 million people in the U.S. owned a smartphone, up 9 percent from December's figures.

When it comes to the mobile operating system market share, Google still maintains a healthy lead over Apple's iOS, but did see a minor slip from December.

The three months ending in March saw Android with 52 percent, down 1.4 percent from December's 53.4 percent.

Apple's iOS saw gains of 2.7 percent. The Apple mobile operating system finished with 39 percent, up from 36.3 percent.

The only other major mobile operating system to see an increase is Microsoft's Windows Phone. It was a minor increase of 0.1 percent. Microsoft garnered 3 percent by the end of March.
