Samsung is moving forward with its next generation Galaxy S4 smartphone following the device's debut on March 14 in New York City.

Samsung Galaxy S3 owners can continue using their 4.69-ounce device or start saving up for the upcoming 4.59-ounce device. Yes, the Galaxy S4 is slightly lighter than its predecessor. Not only so, various differences exist between both flagship devices in specs such as display, camera and memory. 

Here are the differences between the two Samsung smartphones:

The upcoming Galaxy S4 will feature a screen size of five-inches with 1,920x1,080 pixels and 441 pixels per inch (ppi). The Galaxy S3 screen is 0.2-inches smaller, at 4.8-inches. The current flagship smartphone has 1,280x720 pixels and 306 ppi.

The memory data for the two Samsung devices are fairly the same. The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 have 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB internal storage models with a microSD card slot for an additional 64GB of space. The difference is while both smartphones can offer 2GB of RAM, a variant of the Galaxy S3 (I9300) has only 1GB of RAM.

The wireless connections are also the same. The two smartphones connect with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 4.0, NFC, and microUSB version 2.0. The Galaxy S4, however, has added two Wi-Fi connections with Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and an infrared port.

The camera specifications have changed. The Galaxy S3 rear-facing camera has eight-megapixels with 3,264x2,448 pixels, while its front-facing camera has 1.9-megapixels. The Galaxy S4's rear-facing camera has 13-megapixels with 4,128x3,096 pixels, while its front-facing camera has two megapixels.

In terms of video recording, the rear-facing camera for both devices are at 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps), while the front-facing cameras are at 720p and 1080p for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4, respectively. The front-facing camera records at 30fps.

The two Samsung devices utilize the Android mobile operating system. While the Galaxy S3 is upgradable to the Jelly Bean version 4.1.2, the Galaxy S4 will come with the latest 4.2.2, still part of the Jelly Bean brand.

Speaking of battery life, the Galaxy S3 has a 2,100mAh battery, 500mAh lower than the 2,600mAh on the new handset.
