Back in 2009, a trailer for "The Last Guardian" created a great deal of buzz and anticipation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Many pundits felt that the upcoming game title would be a tremendous hit for the Playstation 3 and the wait began in earnest for the day when the video game would be released on the console. Originally 2011 was hinted at as a launch window, but years and years have since passed and the title has slowly fallen into oblivion. Until now.

According to a number of reports, game designer Fumito Ueda has claimed that the title is still in development. "As some of you may have heard, I left Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio some time ago to pursue my creative passions," wrote Ueda on his website. "Nevertheless, I continue working on The Last Guardian as a freelance contributor. While it's been a long time coming, The Last Guardian remains under my creative supervision and is still in development by an incredibly talented team."

He added, "I should also mention that details regarding The Last Guardian's release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement."

In the game, players control a boy who must work with a large creature called Trico to solve puzzles. During the course of the game, the player must care for and feed Trico in order to strengthen his control over the animal.

"The Last Guardian" reportedly began production back in 2007 and according to Digital Trends a playable version of the title had already been put together. Back in August however, Sony Studios President Shuhei Yoshida stated that, "We had the game playable... At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done."

There is no news on what console the title could launch for. IGN suggests that with the Playstation 3's life cycle coming to an end, the title could see a launch on the new Sony console.

Ueda was the creator of such hit titles as "Shadow of the Colossus" and "Ico." He resigned from Sony in 2011.
