***UPDATE: Kate Winslet has been confirmed to star in the role.

Academy Award winner Kate Winslet and "Magic Mike" star Alex Pettyfer are rumored to star in the film adaptation of the bestselling novel Divergent.

"Divergent" is based on the Veronica Roth novel and revolves around an apocalypse in which humanity has reorganized itself into five factions (Abnegation, Candor, Amity Erudite, Dauntless). Each faction upholds and live by a single core value.

Variety has reported that Kate Winslet ("The Reader," "Revolutionary Road") is in talks with Summit to star in the film. However Variety did not confirm what role she would be playing. Speculations state that she could play the role of Tris' mother Natalie Prior or the role of Jeanine Matthews, the villainous leader of the Erudite faction.

Alex Pettyfer has also been in the rumor mill to play the lead role of Four. Other actors that are apparently in consideration include Jeremy Irvine ("War Horse") and Lucas Till. Variety reported that Summit tested the three actors but has decided to search for an older actor.

Neil Burger ("The Illusionist") is set to direct the film with a script by Evan Daugherty ("Snow White and the Hunstman"). Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") is set to play the lead role of Beatrice Prior/Tris.

The film is set to be released on March 21, 2014 with production starting later in 2013. Summit Entertainment will release the film.
