The three starter Pokémon for the sixth generation games have been confirmed and will maintain the three basic types as seen in the previous five generations: fire, grass, and water.

On Jan. 8, Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata presented a Pokémon Direct presentation detailing the history the Pokémon franchise has had in the video game industry, leading to the trailer of "Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y."

During the trailer, the three starter Pokémon were shown and presented to be the grass Pokémon Chespin, the fire Pokémon Fennekin, and the water Pokémon Froakie.

It is unconfirmed, however, if the three starters will have or evolve into a secondary type such as fighting, bug, dark, psychic, etc.

The weaknesses for the starter Pokémon will remain the same as with previous generations: fire has the advantage over grass, grass over water, and water over fire.

Aside from the three starter Pokémon, two legendary Pokémon have also been confirmed to be Xerneas and Yveltal, mascots for "Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y," respectively.

Along with the five before mentioned new Pokémon, classic Pokémon characters from the past five generations will be featured in the new games. In the trailer, a Pokémon from past generations was shown (order of appearance) Pikachu, Magikarp, Golurk, Munchlax, Kirlia, Pansear, Patrat, Litwick, Psyduck, Audino, Weavile, Dratini, and Mienfoo. A generation two Pokémon wasn't directly shown but Pikachu and Weaville have pre-evolutionary Pokémon who made their debuts in Pokémon "Gold," "Silver," and "Crystal."

"Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y" will be released in October 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS across Australia, Europe, North America, and Japan.
